Frequently asked questions
The hotkey doesn't work.
Dictation needs Accessibility access for the global hotkey and Cmd+V pasting. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → enable Dictation. After enabling it for the first time, it can take a second or two before the hotkey kicks in.
Transcription doesn't start.
Dictation launches a bundled local MLX runtime straight from the app. Check the status under Settings → Diagnostics → Local MLX Runtime → Check now. Models are cached under ~/Library/Application Support/Dictation/Models on your first dictation.
The text only ends up in the clipboard.
That's the fallback when Accessibility access is missing. Grant the permission (see above), and Cmd+V will be synthesized automatically so the text is inserted directly.
Where is my data stored?
~/Library/Application Support/Dictation/ — your history as a database, dictionary and snippets as files. The audio temp file is deleted immediately after transcription.
Double-tapping Fn does something else.
By default, macOS assigns the Fn double-tap to the system dictation feature. Under System Settings → Keyboard → "Press Fn key to …", either disable it or map it to a different action — or pick a different hotkey in Dictation.
How do I uninstall Dictation?
Move Dictation.app from /Applications to the Trash. Optionally delete ~/Library/Application Support/Dictation/ to remove your history and dictionary. No LaunchAgents are required.
